Annals of the Free Company of Gower
Volume Seven; The Book of Scab
Sunday, August 4 - Day 21,957
Berel the Old, Eleventh Keeper

It has been nearly sixty years since our company forefathers were chased from Gower by Alric's men, and now only a handful of the "old crew" remain to tell that tale. The company has changed greatly over the years. We were once a mighty mercenary army, an elite band of warriors whose treasure-porters outnumbered our soldiers, but we have since been reduced to a scrubby band of thugs, a pitiful collection of desperate individuals content to eek out a living beyond the Edge of All.

Since our exile, the east has yielded nothing but barren scrublands and vast deserts. We have survived only by selling our services to barbarians wealthy enough to make it worth our while, that is, until now. Ten days ago, we came upon a city the likes we have never seen. Its bronze walls dwarf even the greatest constructions of our world in both size and beauty. Upon approaching the gate, we were invited into the city itself, which was built completely of gold. Even the poorest homes boasted enough wealth to put the Cath Bruig Emperor himself to shame.

The Captain and I were brought to the palace. Everywhere diamonds, rubies, and emeralds cast light of blinding brilliance which seemed to dance playfully in the long, open halls. After feasting on the exotic, yet delicious fruits and vegetables this land had to offer, we were brought before the king, a cranky and despirited fellow who seemed more inclined to hang us than feed us. I was able to explain how we were mercenaries, willing to rid him of his enemies if he would pay us a reasonable price. This caught his attention, and he immediately promised us as much gold as we could carry if we could return the city's standard from the clutches of Cronous.

But Cronous was no local crime-lord, or even a rival noble. He was a Sorcerer of the worst sort, mad as a goat and wielding a power which rivaled even that of the Gods. For centuries he has attacked this glorious city, seeking to take it for either the riches it contained, or for some unknown dark purpose, but has always been thwarted by the great bronze walls. However, it has not been the lofty, stalwart walls which have kept him out - indeed, no mortal effort could ever stop such a sorcerer - but the runes which adorn it. These runes are empowered by the city's golden standard, which when placed upon the highest battlement creates a sort of magic dampening field, nullifying all magic around the city and thus, foiling Cronous' plans to sack it. However, just a few days before our arrival, a traitorous thief stole the standard, and delivered it to Cronous who is at this moment summoning a legion of his darkest minions to destroy the city once and for all. If the standard is not recovered soon, all is lost.

The Prince and his people, who seem to hold all the real power, claim that they cannot assist us on our mission as their weapons are too primitive to be of any use. Frankly, I suspect that their weapons are far superior to ours, and that we are once again doing other's dirty work. However, this time, I do not mind, for if we succeed, we will have enough gold to raise an army to defy the kingdoms of Gower, the Cath Bruig Empire, and the Province simultaniously.

At dawn, we depart for a land marred by Cronous's rage, a place where his minions blanket the earth like a plague and his fury is ever present around us, a place known only as Shattered Earth.

May Wyrd have mercy on our souls.
